"And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11And the servants of Achish said to him, "Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,
'Saul has struck down his thousands and David his ten thousands'?"
12And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14Then Achish said to his servants, "Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"
So, David was fleeing from Saul, who was trying to kill David. David fled to Gath where King Achish ruled. But David became afraid of King Achish because the king knew of David and his great military status. "Uh-oh," said David. "Maybe if I act cuckoo for Cocoa-Puffs, the king will not kill me." So, that is how he acted. He scribbled on doors and let spit run down his beard. Whoa, this doesn't sound like a great warrior to me. It didn't to King Achish, either. He said, "Behold, you see this man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?" I can just see David whispering, "No! No! No!" Fingers crossed, waiting. So, "David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam." Safely. (1 Samuel 22:1)
So, what's the lesson, you ask? Among other things, God has a sense of humor. To include this account in His Written Word, God had to have thought this important. But, when we read this story, we see another side of God (one of His many sides). This side shows his humorous side. Our God is a God of Love, a God of Justice, a God of Sorrow, and a God of Laughter.
