Two men get on a plane. They are each handed a parachute. The first man is told, "Take this parachute and you will get an all-around better flight. It will bring you an easy and pleasurable flight." The man takes the parachute and sits down. He's tentative about this. The parachute is bulky and doesn't exactly look the most comfortable, but finally he puts it on. It's uncomfortable, though, and after a while, he notices that other passengers are pointing and laughing at him. Angry now, he throws the parachute on the floor. The person that told him that the parachute brings easiness and pleasure was a liar! The first man is very bitter.
Now, the second man was told, "This plane is going to crash any minute. Take this parachute and use it to jump from the plane to safety." The second man hurriedly puts it on. He's oblivious to how uncomfortable it is or the people laughing at him. This parachute is going to save his life. He clings to that parachute for all it's worth. When the plane crashes, the second man makes the 20,000 foot jump with the parachute and his life is saved. The first man is not so lucky. After abandoning that parachute, he crashes with the plane.
This story is told in Way of the Master. The point is that: the parachute is like Jesus. If we tell a non-Christian that Jesus will bring easiness and pleasure in this life, we're liars. The person we told may try Jesus on but will soon realize that what we told was false. Jesus didn't promise easiness and pleasure, He promised trials and tribulations. Most likely, the non-Christian will quickly take Jesus off and will crash and burn. But, if we tell a non-Christian that they are going to crash and burn, but that Jesus will save them, they are more likely to receive Him. They are also more likely to stand through trials and tribulations.
If you've never put on Jesus, who will save you from eternal torment, you can do it very easily through the ABC's:
1. A- Admit to God you are a sinner. (Romans 3:23)
2. B- Believe that Jesus is the Son of God. (Romans 10:9)
3. C- Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. (Romans 10:9)
