Yesterday my devotions found me in Deuteronomy 28, the famous "Blessings for Obedience - Curses for Disobedience" chapter. Though this chapter was written for Jewish Christians nearly 3,000 years ago and their specific circumstances, the same principles apply to the 21st century Christians (i.e. if we're obedient to the Lord, He will bless us, if not, we'll be cursed).
"And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out." (Deuteronomy 28:1-6)An interesting phrase that I picked up for the first time this time through was "if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD ... all these blessings shall ... overtake you." Wouldn't it be amazing to be overtaken by blessings? How about the other beautiful promises? Blessing in our city. Blessing in our food. Blessing when we enter our house. Blessing when we leave our house. Blessing in our children. Overtaken by blessings. I pray that we would listen to the voice of the Lord always, that we would be thankful for every blessing we're given, and that, as a result, we'd be overtaken by blessings.
