Turning the Pages: Reading and Recently Read

An August that was filled with big reading plans went by way too quickly. Now we're two days away from September and I'm just getting to my reading now! Here's what I'm in:

The Heroic Boldness of Martin Luther by Steven J. Lawson - The second book I've read in Dr. Lawson's Long Line of Godly Men Profiles, The Heroic Boldness of Martin Luther is an excellent and thorough overview of Luther's boldness in his preaching. There was something different about how Luther preached than others in their pre-Reformation Roman Catholic-central Western Europe. Luther preached with the boldness of God and was driven by the power of the gospel. Even if you're not a preacher, this is a fantastic and convicting read!

Little Men by Louisa May Alcott - Cindy Lombardo: "Louisa May Alcott's charming, although now somewhat dated, companion piece to the perennially popular Little Women highlights the life of the wildest of the March sisters, Jo, now married to her professor, and presiding as the harried but happy mistress over the Plumfield Estate School home to a small group of needy boys, relatives, and sons whose mischievous antics and emotional upheavals provide ample opportunities for Alcott to share her personal philosophy about learning and life. Filled with pathos and humor as well as insights into the mysterious world of childhood, Little Men entertains and educates in equal measure."

Name above All Names by Alistair Begg and Sinclair B. Ferguson - This is a book I've wanted for a long time and which was given to me a few days ago as a birthday gift from Mom and Dad. In Name above All Names, the authors, two Scottish theologians living in the States, go through seven names of Jesus and seven aspects of His work and mission. They look at the Seed of the Woman, the True Prophet, the Great High Priest, the Conquering King, the Son of Man, the Suffering Servant and the Lamb on the Throne. This is not a book for one wanting plethoras of catchy illustrations and humorous anecdotes. This is a book for one wanting straight theology in a well-written and simple manner to grow in both grace and godliness. I can't wait to read more!
