God has called us to work, yes. That was the first task He gave Adam and Eve (Gen. 2:15) and it was good.
Work is good. That is our Christian duty.
But fun is also good. Daydreaming and board games and hot chocolate on cold days. Pleasure is good.
That's because God has given us both - work and rest, toil but also fun.
I'm reminded of Joe Rigney in his book, The Things of Earth. He says, "Sometimes a pleasure is just a pleasure. Period. Full stop. God is honored by your enjoyment of it, your gratitude for it, and its fruitfulness in your life for the sake of the kingdom. So just receive the gift as one of the many pleasures at His right hand."
If we can't enjoy the fun, we're not doing life right. We're not doing Christianity right.
Christianity is not stoicism. We're not meant to live this life like robots, mechanically going through the motions internally chanting "this world is not our home ... this world is not our home ... this world is not our home."
God invented fun. And He allows you to have it here on this earth.
Though, what's even better, is that one day the fun will literally never stop. In the New Heavens and New Earth, we will have perfect enjoyment of everything all the time.
But while you're here, you have a responsibility to rest and I'm telling you to have fun.
Don't get trapped in a vacuum. Pop the bubble of seriousness and just enjoy life. Build a snowman, go to the park, watch an entire sunset, get a coffee and go for a drive, read a story to your kids just because.
Life is God's and is meant to glorify Him. And I think grateful, joyful, simple fun glorifies Him.
Don't you?
