The other night, we watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas. As I watched it, the song, You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch stuck out to me, the lyrics specifically. This is one of the verses in the song:
You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch! You're a nasty, wasty skunk! Your heart is full of unwashed socks. Your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Grinch! ... You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch! ... Your heart's a dead tomato, splotched with moldy, purple spots, Mr. Grinch! Your soul is an appalling dump-heap, overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable, mangled-up in tangled-up knots!I don't know what stuck out to you in that verse, but I know what did to me! The Grinch is just like an unsaved person! Whether they know it or not, an unsaved person's heart is full of unwashed socks and their soul is full of gunk! Without Jesus, their heart's a dead tomato, splotched with moldy, purple spots. And sadly, their soul is an appalling dump-heap, overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots. They could be the sweetest, kindest, nicest person you know, but if they don't have Jesus in their heart ... well, their soul is empty.
Sounds pretty grim, huh? Bet you're wondering why I'm writing this post just four (!) short days until Christmas. The answer's simply really.
Christmas is the time where we celebrate Jesus' birth. But why was He born? Like my dad preached in his message on Sunday, Jesus was born to die for the sins of man. So Christmas shouldn't be about candy canes and presents, it should be our time to think about Jesus birth, and then think about seeking and saving the lost. It's hard to not get caught up in ourselves this holiday season, but watching the Grinch reminded me that this Christmas season, we must be thinking about the salvation of souls, and what better of a time to tell the good news to others than at the celebration of our Saviour's birth!
"And he [Jesus] said to them, 'Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.'"
