Fun Trivia Fact: What is Labour Day and Where Did it Come From?

Welcome, readers. As I pondered what to do today, I thought about Labour Day. I realized that I had no idea why Labour Day was even a holiday. So, I did the most logical thing that I could: I Googled 'Labour Day'.

64 million, 500 thousand articles came up. I looked at the 'Wikipedia' one. When I looked at the origins of Labour Day in Canada I found out that "Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to April 14, 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union's strike for a 58-hour work-week.....Labour leaders decided to call another similar demonstration on September 3 to protest the arrests. Seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, to repeal the "barbarous" anti-union laws. Parliament passed the Trade Union Act on June 14 the following year, and soon all unions were demanding a 54-hour work-week.

Wow! These people believed in something so much that they weren't afraid to march in Canada's capital, demanding something as silly as a 54-hour work week. I don't know about you, but when I see something like this, it makes me ashamed. These people were so determined to get what they wanted, that they weren't going to take no for an answer. As a Christian, I have been guilty many times of not even trying to witness to others. Jesus gave us a commision to preach the gospel. (Mark 16:15) Often times, I will take no for an answer. Sometimes I'm too afraid. Other times, I'm embarrassed. I need Jesus to help me be determined just like these workers that wanted better work hours. I want to bee determined like: Mary Slessor, John and Charles Wesley, Billy Graham.

So, there is your fun trivia fact for today. Now you can go and stump all your friends. Happy Labour Day, and remember to be determined to witness for Christ.
