Montana woman fends off backyard bear attack with zucchini from garden

Yes, that was the headline of a news story on CBC. Basically, in the story, a black bear intruded on a Montana woman's property and attacked her dog. Without thinking, her mind only on her struggling twelve year old collie, she kicked the bear as hard as she could. The bear then turned to attack her. He swiped his paw at her leg and ripped her jeans. She ran into her house and tried to shut the door but the bear squeezed its way inside. It was then that the woman reached for the closest thing, a 14-inch zucchini she had picked from her garden earlier that day. She threw the zucchini at the bear, it bonked him on the head, and the bear fled.

Now that's what I call news.

But I feel bad for the bear. I mean, you just come wandering by, and suddenly, BAM! A dog attacks you and a woman's throwing zucchinis at you. I mean, what is that about?

But the whole point I'm writing this is not to plead the bear's case. No, the point of this post is to show you that we don't know what's coming at us. I bet the woman did not wake up that morning and think, "Huh, I'm going to fend off a bear with a zucchini today." No, she had no idea what was coming that day. In her case, it was a miracle that she survived, but in many other cases, we may not be so lucky. We have no idea what's going to happen today or tomorrow or next week or next year.

But we do know the Lord is in control.

And though we have no idea what's headed our way, we do know that the Lord holds the future in His hands. Though we make plans, God's in control. Like Proverbs 16:9 says, "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." We can make all the plans we like, but when it all comes down to it, we must, I repeat, must trust in the Lord with all our hearts (Proverbs 3:5) and we must not be anxious about what the future holds (Matthew 6:25-34).
